What is an Eating Disorder?
The textbook definition of eating disorders is, “any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits”. An eating disorder is a mental disorder that may affect a person’s physical appearance, however, that does not define a person’s eating disorder, any race, age, and gender can suffer from these illnesses.
The History of Eating Disorders
Although the social desire for thinness may seem like a recent trend, eating disorders can be traced back to the late 16th century, an English physician described his findings of… “two cases of “nervous consumption” —one in a boy and one in a girl” (Muhlheim par. 5). Both the boy and the girl exhibited a lack of appetite, with no other explanation other than they were “nervous”, hence the name of “anorexia nervosa”.
What are the different types of Eating Disorders?
As the media fails to represent, there are other eating disorders other than Anorexia and Bulimia nervosa. Some examples are B.E.D. (Binge Eating Disorder), O.S.F.E.D. (Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders), Orthorexia, Pica, Rumination Disorder, and more.
Who can be affected by Eating Disorders?
Contrary to media representation, eating disorders can affect anyone of any race, gender, and age. Eating disorders can also affect any range of weights; according to clinical psychologist Lauren Mulheim: “what is less widely recognized is that restrictive eating disorders… can manifest in individuals at higher weights”. It is possible for anyone to experience the effects of an eating disorder.
